6-year-old drowns in NC motel swimming pool
A 6-year-old boy from Jackson County drowned in a hotel pool in Morganton, authorities say.
The boy's family identified him to News 13 as Jayden Lane Norman of Jackson County.
City officials said Jayden drowned Saturday night at the Comfort Inn on Burkemont Avenue.
Around 10 p.m. Saturday, public safety officers responded to a call of a child found underwater in the Comfort Inn's indoor pool.
Investigators say the 6-year-old was swimming in the pool with friends and family when he moved along the side of the pool by holding onto the edge. Authorities say Jayden moved to the deep end of the pool, where his hands slipped off the side.
City officials said, according to Jayden's father, that he didn't know how to swim, and was told to stay near the shallow end.
Morganton Department of Public Safety noted in a release that "visibility was poor in the water." When family noticed Jayden was missing, authorities say he was pulled from the water and nearby adults began CPR.
The Morganton Department of Public Safety said Jayden was taken to CHS Morganton, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials said the boy's family was in town for a baseball tournament.
