IRMA'S Wind: Max wind gusts across Florida

As Irma impacts South Florida, winds have been gusting over hurricane force in many areas. The Florida Keys have seen some of the highest wind gusts with gusts over 100 mph in spots! The Naples weather station reported a gust to 142 mph.

For comparison, in the summer, the National Weather Service will issue a Severe T-storm Warning in our area if winds in a thunderstorm are expected to reach 58 mph. Winds of this magnitude can easily topple trees and cause property damage.

South Florida has building codes that were adopted after Andrew (the last Category 5 storm to hit the US) which require new buildings to be able to withstand winds of 111mph (Cat 3).
