Possible WWII naval mine discovered on Outer Banks
What could be a World War II naval mine has washed up on the Outer Banks.
Currituck County Emergency Management says it was found around 7:15 a.m. Monday morning on Whale Head Beach, according to NBC affiliate WITN.
Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Rebecca Gay says the call came in as a mine or some sort of ordnance that washed up on the beach.
She said they have called Cherry Point's Ordinance Unit to investigate the discovery, but in the meantime deputies have secured the immediate area around the device.
Gay says there have been no evacuations because of the discovery.
