Wintry weather makes a quick stop in our area

The first half of October was the warmest on record, and now...this. It is a cold, damp Sunday with some snow showers in the higher elevations to boot.

While the Tri-Cities and surrounding valleys may see a few flakes, it's doubtful that any will accumulate. We have, however, already seen some snow accumulations in parts of Wise County (as of 8:45 AM Sunday). Accumulations could get up to an inch on the ridge tops in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee.

Higher totals can't be ruled out on Carver's Gap and the High Knob Massif. Be careful, if you have plans to drive to these spots. I-26 near Sam's Gap usually gets a little dicey in this kind of pattern.

The challenge on our end is that the radar beam misses some of the snow that's falling. Luckily, we have a vast camera network to give us the information we need. We also have you! You can send in any reports throughout the day on social media, or send an email to

Temperatures drop below freezing Sunday night, which may lead to a few slick spots. This is even the case in areas that don't get any snow. The rain we saw last night may re-freeze on a few area roads. Be alert to that, and take things slow over bridges/overpasses on the Monday morning commute.

While this isn't a major winter weather event, it is still uncharacteristic for late October. Be sure to stay up to date on our website and Mobile App. Then, check in with us at 6 o'clock for News 5 at 6:00.
