BMA aproves design contract for Kingsport Aquatics Center expansion
KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The Kingsport Aquatics Center could soon be expanding. The board of mayor and aldermen approved a $160,000 design contract with Lose & Associates.
"Any time you build a facility of this magnitude, if you're not looking every five years to make some sort of a change, some sort of addition, you're going to become stagnant," Assistant City Manager Chris McCartt said.
The $2-million expansion would include a new 25-yard outdoor pool for swimming and a kids play area. A pavillion, more office space, a walk-in freezer for the concessions area, and two more restrooms would also be added. Programs involving the new pool are planned.
Funding for the expansion will come from bonds paid for through the hotel tax.
McCartt expects the project construction to be approved in June and begin around Labor Day. The expansion would open in the spring of 2019.
