Families hang ornaments for victims of violent crimes in Sullivan County

The holiday season can be a sad time for many families that have lost a loved one.

On Thursday night, victims of violent crimes were honored in Sullivan County. Family members placed an ornament in their memory on a wreath. Among those, the Bristol, Tennessee police department hung an ornament for Mark Vance, who was killed answering a domestic call.

State Representative Bud Hulsey placed an ornament for Mike Locke, who was putting up campaign signs when he was hit by a drunk driver.

News 5 also talked to the husband of Jennifer Rooney, who was killed in the Volunteer Parkway shooting in Summer 2016. He said this is their second Christmas without her.

"It's hitting home a little bit more," David Rooney said. "Last year, I think we were still kind of numb and this year, it's kind of hitting a little harder. Christmas was her holiday. She loved Christmas. She loved getting together with people. She loved giving to people. She just had a big heart. She loved everything about Christmas."

The wreath will be on display at the Sullivan County Justice Center through the end of the month. The county also lit its traditional Christmas tree, a 30-ft. Douglas Fir.
