KINGSPORT, TN - Day two of Fun Fest is off to a great start in Kingsport. Children of all ages were out with their families fishing in the youth fishing derby. There were several different winning categories including biggest fish, longest carp, and first fish caught. "We've got a lot of kids out here fishing today, everybody's having a good time, we've got a lot of prizes to give away. The whole group is here from the Optimist Club of Colonial Heights to help put this event on...this is probably one of the biggest turnouts I've seen," says chairperson of the Optimist Fishing Derby Al Tipton. The next stop on the fun fest tour was at the Kingsport Aquatic Center for the cardboard boat races. Paddling across the pool, the boats had to make it to the other side of the pool and back without sinking. That may sound simple, but not when the vessel is built with crafting supplies. The crowd was impressed by the competitors who made it fun to watch. "This is my first year doing this and it's a whole lot of fun and it's been a really great experience. My boat was the first one to sink, it's fun even if you do sink," says event sponsor Daniel Hemminger of St. Dominic's Catholic Youth Group. The last stop of the day was at the car show on Main Street. Car owner Adam Metcalf talks about what events like this mean to him. "Fun Fest is a fun thing to do, it gets the community involved with one another it gets us out here in a fellowship type of atmosphere with a common interest-- these cars," he says. Whether it's at the park, at the pool, or at the car show, Fun Fest events were happening all over Kingsport, all day.
