Holston Valley Medical Center hosts annual NICU reunion

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Every year dozens of babies spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Holston Valley Medical Center. During this time patients and their families form special bonds with the NICU staff.

On Sunday Holston Valley held their annual NICU reunion in Kingsport. It's a chance for parents and children who spent time in the NICU to reconnect with the nurses who cared for them.

"That's why we do what we do," said NICU nurse and event organizer, Susanne Amyx. "To see them come through the door and say 'hey look there she is'. They're excited to see us because they want us to see how well those babies are doing."

We spoke to the Moore family who spent three months in the NICU with their son carter, he is now a healthy five-year-old boy. They said the relationship they had with the nurses kept them going during this difficult time.

"To have had the team we had and had the hospital, and had them look after him like he was their own, we feel blessed," said Carter's mother, Kelsey Moore. It's hard to even believe he was there and he was ever that small."

The yearly reunion has been going on for the past 15 years, and organizers said it grows every year with more NICU graduates joining in.
