Johnson City Memorial Day ceremony goes off without hitch, despite stolen flags

Stolen flags didn't stop dozens from honoring our nation's heroes at the Washington County-Johnson City Veterans' Memorial.

The American flag and the POW/MIA flag were stolen from the memorial over the weekend. Organizers were quickly able to replace them before Monday's event.

Chairwoman of the memorial board Brenda Barnette said she's happy to see young and old come out to honor the fallen. And she calls the theft 'disheartening,' but she said she wouldn't let it ruin the annual event.

"If it was their intention to deter our patriotism, they missed their mission because you can see this crowd," Barnette said. "People are very supportive of the mission we have."

The stolen flags have been reported to the Johnson City police department.
