Mary the Elephant sculpture created for festival in Erwin
ERWIN, Tenn. - It's been 100 years since Mary the Elephant was hanged in Erwin after she killed her circus trainer. During the past week, Erwin held the first ever Elephant Revival Festival.
Organizers say this festival was a huge success with a big turnout. A nine foot Mary was created by Backyard Terror's Dinosaur Park in Bluff City.
It took about 10 weeks to build and was showcased in this past weekend's parade.
"It was a time for the community to come together. We raised over $6300 for the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee and we were just very pleased by this community effort," said a member of the R.I.S.E Initiative, Tyler Engle.
All the proceeds of the festival will benefit the elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee.
