Police warning shoppers to be careful with purchases

With the Christmas shopping season now in full swing local police are reminding people to protect their purchases.

Officers tell us crime is always more prevalent during this time of year.

Police want shoppers to pay attention to their surroundings.

They say hide packages and valuables out of sight in your vehicle, and, of course, lock your doors.

They say thieves are usually looking for the easiest opportunity.

"If you can make yourself a less attractive target they, sometimes, will move on to an easier target. The goal is to make yourself a hard target. Make yourself a less attractive victim," Lt. Keith Anderson with the Bristol Virginia Police Dept. said.

Anderson says they step up patrols around shopping areas this time of year to try to prevent burglaries from happening in the first place.
