Summer means mosquitoes are biting
Health officials are urging community leaders to prepare for mosquito season.
The Zika Virus is the focus of a presentation given to local officials by the Tennessee Department of Health.
They touted the success of the mosquito control operation last summer in Miami.
They hope this will give local leaders a chance to be prepared.
"We're working with county and city mayors just to do some planning on what our response would be. So there's a health department response and then there'd be potentially a response from the municipalities in terms of mosquito control," Regional Medical Director David Kirschke said.
Besides spraying for mosquitoes, they're encouraging home owners to eliminate any standing water where mosquitoes breed.
Last year, our region had seven cases of Zika Virus reported. All of those patients contracted the virus elsewhere.
