"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opens Thursday with $45M
The Star Wars franchise now stands alone when it comes to Thursday motion picture openings in the U.S.
The eighth installment in the saga which now stretches over five decades opened to $45 million box office receipts- the second-largest Thursday opening in U.S. box office history- trailing only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" which raked in $57 million.
Variety reported that the movie is on track for a $200 million opening weekend based on estimates and advanced ticket sales. That would rank it fourth in U.S. history behind "The Force Awakens," "Jurassic Park" and "The Avengers."
The record for the biggest opening weekend in global history was set in April when Universal's "The Fate of the Furious" collected $541 million. Jedi is targeting a $425 million open, the report said.
