An investigation has been launched by the Wise County, Virginia Sheriff's Office after a middle school student was seriously injured during an altercation on campus, News 5 has confirmed.

Superintendent of Schools Greg Mullins said the incident occurred at Union Middle School in Big Stone Gap on Wednesday but because it involved juveniles the system is limited in what can be released.

"We are cooperating with the sheriff's departments investigation. We are handling the incident according to school policy. Safety of the children has always been our first priority," said the statement sent to News 5 by Mullins.

The family of one of the female students involved in the fight told News 5 the child was flown by medical helicopter to Knoxville where she underwent surgery Wednesday evening.

News 5's John Engel is in Big Stone Gap and will have a complete report this evening.
