For Star Mays, saying goodbye to her husband never gets easier.

"I know he's at peace now, but I just miss him so much," Mays said. "I miss the Rusty that was before the illness." Rusty was a well-known attorney in Greene County, practicing for nearly 30 years. In 2012, at just 57-years-old, Alzheimer's disease started stripping him of life. Bits and pieces of the man so many knew and loved would come and go. "It's just the hardest thing to see someone like that and to know that they are there but there's nothing you can do," Mays said. "They're not going to get better, it's only going to get worse." His disease eventually getting too difficult for his wife to be his sole caregiver, so Rusty was constantly in and out of nursing homes and hospitals never getting proper treatment. Mays reaching out to organizations like Alzheimer's Tennessee, advocating for more options.

"It is truly a 36-hour-a-day job," Tracey Kendall, regional director of Alzheimer's Tennessee said. "It's a labor of love and we know these individuals want to take care of their family members in the best way possible, but you only have so much steam." Mays continues keeping Rusty's memory alive by raising awareness. More than that, she's letting people know you don't have to go through anything alone. "It's just an awful disease," Mays said. "You see the person you love just slipping away little by little." The Tri-Cities light the way Alzheimer's Tennessee walk is this Saturday.
