Valentine's Day is a busy day at Bristol, Tennessee's City Hall. A higher than average amount of couples are coming in to get married.

Judge Randy Kennedy has been marrying couples in the courtroom for almost eight years.

He says on Valentine's Day, he see triple the amount of couples come in.

"Usually we average one marriage a week. But today's Valentine's Day, so we have three couples that are getting married today," said Kennedy.

He says there are several benefits to getting married at city hall.

"It's a lot less expensive than a big wedding," said Kennedy. "And when there's military people involved, they're just in town for a week or a weekend and they want to get married before they go back to base, so we accommodate them."

Kennedy says if you blink you could miss the ceremony! They last less than five minutes.

He holds wedding ceremonies every Wednesday at the courthouse at 12:45 p.m.

But before you can head to the courthouse, you need a marriage license. You can purchase one at the county clerk's office.

"During the holidays-- Christmas and Thanksgiving-- we issue quite a few marriage licenses. After that, it kind of drops off. But then around Valentine's Day, it picks back up a little," said deputy clerk, Teresa Jacobs.

Once you get your marriage license, you have 30 days to use it.
