Sheriff: Botched robbery leads to suspect's death

GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina sheriff's office says a man has died after carrying out a botched robbery. The Gaston Gazette reports ( ) that Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter says 51-year-old Marion Palmer Yarborough and another man, both from Gastonia, tried to rob a mobile home outside Lincolnton on Saturday by arranging to sell weapons stolen from Yarborough's girlfriend to its resident as a ruse. Carpenter says the men made the resident drop to the floor at gunpoint when a woman emerged from a bedroom with a handgun and exchanged fire with the robbers. Yarborough was killed in the shooting. Deputies are searching for the other man, who fled the scene. Carpenter says charges are not likely to be filed against the shooter, but the final decision rests with District Attorney Mike Miller. ___ Information from: The Gaston Gazette, (Copyright 2017 The Associated Press.
