A Russell County, Virginia man is due in court next month after being arrested Tuesday and accused of killing a family's pet dog last week.

Jimmy Campbell of Lebanon is charged with one count of torture of an animal causing death, a Class 6 felony, maiming or killing an animal and destruction of property with intent, both misdemeanors, according to court documents obtained by News 5.

The Russell County Sheriff's Office was called to the home on June 7 after the family living in the Jessee's Mill community near Cleveland found their German Shepherd named Gunner dead from gunshot wounds not far from their property.

Campbell is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in General District Court on July 10.
