Five Wythe County residents were sentenced in federal court in Abingdon Monday for their role in a wire fraud scheme that saw them skim over $1 million from cash receipts.

Gary Daniel Musick, 46, received 18 months in prison while Larry Dean Ball, 68, was sentenced to a year and a day, according to a report issued by U.S. District Court. Harold Hart, 80, Katrina Rose Freeman, 42, and Mary Carroll Ball, 67, all received two years probation.

The five defendants were convicted of skimming $1.1 million over a six-year period and hiding those profits from the sales at the Old Fort Western Store in Wytheville to give some employees extra cash payments and to help pay the rent for the establishment, prosecutors said.

All five were also ordered to pay thousands in restitution to the IRS and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
