Virginia corrections: Wallens Ridge prisoner dies after cell fight

A convict serving a life sentence plus 207 years at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap died Friday as a result of injuries sustained in a fight with his cellmate. (VADOC)

A prisoner with a long list of felonies was found dead following an altercation with his cellmate Friday afternoon at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap.

The death was reported by the Virginia Department of Corrections. The agency did not identify the convict who was attacked then pronounced dead just after 2:30 p.m. at a Southwest Virginia hospital.

The 55-year-old prison was serving a life sentence plus 207 years for multiple robbery convictions, larceny, assault and battery, carjacking and kidnapping/abduction, the report said. The incident is still under investigation.
