Police: 90-year-old veteran assaulted in grocery store lot in Florida
Police say a 90-year-old Air Force veteran was assaulted in a Publix parking lot in Winter Haven.
Winter Haven police say the victim was backing his car out of a parking space just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday. At the same time, another car was driving down the aisle in the wrong direction, according to a report from our sister station WPEC.
Police say the victim checked behind him and thought he was okay to back his car out, but accidentally crashed into the oncoming car. Both vehicles sustained only minor damage.
Two people got out of the car and started cursing and yelling at the man, according to the incident report. Police say several people walked past the argument and watched what was happening.
Six minutes later, one of the occupants from the second car punched the 90-year-old in the face, causing him to land face-first on the pavement, according to police. The man lost consciousness for a brief moment.
Authorities say a witness tried to stop the attacker and the other occupant from leaving the scene and was dragged a short distance by their car before falling to the ground. The driver and passenger fled the scene.
The victim was taken to Winter Haven Hospital with multiple injuries, including a severe cut to his head, large facial scrapes, as well as scrapes along both hands and arms.
Police made an arrest on Friday after they were able to positively identify 24-year-old Gregory Leonard Krizsan as the man who hit the 90-year-old.
He was taken to the Polk County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery on a person over the age of 65.
