Attempted robbery suspect tells clerk to call 911, waits for police to arrive
Johnson City police say a robbery suspect waited outside the store to surrender to police.
Police responded to a report of an attempted robbery at the Scotchman on Unaka Avenue Saturday.
They said Jay Payne came into the store and told the clerk he was there to rob her and that he had a gun while holding his hand behind his back.
Police said Payne then told the clerk to call 911 and eventually went outside and sat on the sidewalk until police arrived.
Payne is being held in the Washington County Detention center on a $50,000 bond.
