BREAKING: TBI identifies suspect in Kingsport standoff

UPDATE, 11:20 p.m.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the subject found dead in a condominium as Hugh Kyle Hurd, 58, of Kingsport.

At the request of 2 nd District Attorney General Barry Staubus, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in the 1900 block of Manor Court in Kingsport.


UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.

Kingsport Police confirm the subject of a standoff in the Ridgefields neighborhood is dead.

According to a release, personnel began clearing neighbors from the condominiums near the suspect's resident.

About 6 p.m., the S.W.A.T. team made entry into the residence. He was found dead inside.

The exact cause of his death remains under investigation pending an autopsy.

His identity is not being released pending notification of his next of kin.

The scene has been declared safe and residents are allowed to return home.

The Kingsport Police Department contacted the office of the 2nd Judicial District Attorney asking for an independent investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The KPD Criminal Investigations Division will also investigate.


UPDATE, 6:34 p.m.

Kingsport PD Public Information Officer Tom Patton is confirming that two police officers were shot during a standoff with a suspect Thursday afternoon and are going into surgery at a local hospital.

Patton noted that the officer were both conscious and alert and the injuries at this point are not considered life-threatening.


UPDATE, 6:06 p.m.

A suspect has been arrested following a standoff between police and a suspect in a condo complex located within the Ridgefields area, Kingsport Police Public Information Officer Tom Patton told News 5.

Police were at the scene just after 2:30 p.m. at a residence on Mayor Court to apprehend a suspect who had pre-existing warrants. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the residence, Patton said.

Officers were placed in strategic spots around the complex to keep an eye out for the suspect when shots were fired outside the residence at 4:45 p.m., the PIO said. The suspect was then taken into custody just before 6 p.m.

Kingsport police are on the scene of an incident located in the Ridgefields subdivision Thursday afternoon.

Investigators told News 5 that neighbors received emergency notification calls warning people of an emergency situation with instructions to stay inside their homes.

News 5 is in route to the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.
