County to apply for TDOT grant for Sullivan Co. high school roadway

The Sullivan County Commission voted Monday to allow the county highway department to apply for a TDOT grant to fund a road to the site of the new county high school.

If the county does receive the grant it will cover 50-percent of the cost of building the road up to $2-million dollars.

County Highway Commissioner Jim Belgeri says the road is needed so buses and drivers can have easier access to neighboring Interstate 81.

"I think it's important that the county take advantage of all these things that are available to it. T-DOT has had this grant program in place since 1965. It's been very helpful and very useful," Belgeri said.

The new school, which will include students from the communities of Sullivan Central, North and South, is planned to be built off exit 63 on Lynn Road.
