Demolition of vacant building in Kingsport to help park and veteran memorial access

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The city of Kingsport is improving access to a veterans memorial at J. Fred Johnson Park by demolishing an old building.

The building at North Eastman and Fort Henry Drive was a Highway Patrol building. More recently, it housed the offices of city engineers.

Now, it is being leveled to create a lot specifically for the Gold Star memorial.

Parks and Recreation Manager for the City of Kingsport Kitty Frazier explains, "The lot will have approximately 50 spaces, and it will support parks and recreation programs in the park, the veterans memorial, and the planned expansion of the Gold Star Memorial."

The city engineers offices were moved to a downtown location for easier access.

The construction of the new parking lot is expected to be complete mid-September.
