Dolly donating 165K books to children in hurricane zones
Dolly Parton announced Wednesday plans to donate 165,000 books to children in portions of the U.S. affected by hurricanes through her Imagination Library program.
Parton, the Sevier County, TN native and Country Music Hall of Fame member, said in a statement posted on her official website that she wanted to return the favor of people from across the nation who helped her home state in November when a devastating wildfire killed 14 people and left millions of dollars in damage.
The books and more than $90,000 to cover shipping costs is part of a collective effort with Penguin Books and the First Book organization to send 500,000 books to the Gulf region through the One America Appeal for Hurricane Relief initiative founded by America's living presidents.
