Homicide investigation in Carter County, Sheriff says "Quit Gossiping"
CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. - Mary Nolen was found beaten and unresponsive in her home in Carter County on July 14. On Wednesday, July 26, she passed away in the hospital.
County deputies are investigating. They're working to determine whether or not she was raped. Nolen indicated before her death that she had been raped. When we last spoke to the Sheriff, he said investigators were awaiting medical records from the hospital.
"We're still re-interviewing people, we're polygraphing people," Sheriff Dexter Lunceford. "We've done DNA and we'll continue to do that on any suspect or person of interest that may pop up. We've re-canvassed the trailer park, and it's just an ongoing investigation."
The sheriff is also trying to quell the rumor mill.
"Quit gossiping on the internet," Lunceford said. "I told the family not to listen to that stuff because people put all kinds of conjecture and untruths on these sites, and we can't operate off of that."
Neighbors in the Stoney Creek area said they were shocked by the crime. Natasha Peters is concerned for her kids' safety. She has worked in the area as a CNA for four years, and was planning to move in soon.
"I'd be scared to live here now," Peters said. "Used to not."
The sheriff also told me that his deputies have interviewed several persons of interest.
The family have declined to make any comment at this time and ask for their privacy to be respected.
