Thanksgiving means turkey to most people but for some it also means the Turkey Trot.

Sign up is now underway for the 5K race in Johnson City. It kicked off Thursday at Cherokee Elementary.

Trotter the Turkey was there with his mascot friends getting the kids excited with some running of their own.

Since the first Turkey Trot 12-years ago the group has given about $150,000 to organizations promoting health and wellness.

"We invite the entire community to come out and enjoy a good workout on Thanksgiving morning. Then go back and spend time with the family and have some good turkey," President of host organization Up and At 'Em Mark Finucane said.

Turkey Trot organizers also handed over a $10,000 check to Niswonger Children's Hospital this year. That money goes to the Morning Mile program encouraging kids to walk a mile each day.
