Locals win BBQ world championship
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The Jack Daniel's World Championship barbecue competition is a coveted title held each year in Lynchburg, TN.
This year's winners are from our area.
Walt and Rebekah Moulton are Jonesborough natives, and travel the country cooking barbecue. Now they can say they make the best barbecue in the entire world.
They won a check for $10,000, several bottles of the sponsored bourbon, and a new knife set.
"You win a lot of championships, and you'll win a lot of grants, and you'll forget a lot of them. But no one will forget that you won the Jack," said champion Walt Moulton.
The husband and wife team went up against 95 teams, and smoked them all.
Walt has been barbecuing for almost ten years, then he met Rebekah and she joined the team.
"She came along and she thought I was crazy, because she didn't know people did stuff like this. But she's caught on pretty well, and if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be where I am," said Walt.
"He said he did competition barbecue, and I didn't know what that entailed," said Rebekah. "Starting out I thought it was more of 'hey, it's a weekend away, we're going to cook a little, we're going to have a good time.' And then as we got into it, he settled down and started taking things more seriously and that's when we started winning."
Both Walt and Rebekah agree, husband and wife teams work better together.
"It's amazing what his dedication has gotten him. It drives me crazy sometimes. And there are weekends where I will be home and I'll sit on the laundry room floor and have a fit about all the laundry I have to do," said Rebekah. "But at the end of the day, you can't take away something that he loves to do-- something that he's good at."
They have a 3-year-old daughter who travels to all the competitions with them.
"For the last two years she's been the taste tester. She can taste the meat and say if it's going to win or not. And nine times out of 10 she's right," said Rebekah about their daughter.
The duo will head to Houston, TX in February for another round of competitions.
