Nashville high school student killed in home invasion

The search continues for the two gunmen who killed a Tennessee teenager during a home invasion early Wednesday morning.

Police now say they believe the suspects were targeting the wrong home, according to a report from NBC affiliate WSMV.

The two gunmen kicked in the back door of the townhome on Capitol Point. They held the family at gunpoint as they forced them out of their bedrooms, including 17-year-old Ja'Donte Thompson and his mother, stepfather and grandfather.

Thompson reportedly tried fighting back against his attackers, which why police believe they shot him. His stepfather was pistol-whipped.

According to police, Thompson was shot in the chest. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died.

Officials have confirmed Thompson was a student at Hillsboro High School.

The suspects ran away before anyone could get a good look at them. They are believed to be in their 30s.

According to police, the exact motive isn't clear, but officials said they did not find money or drugs inside the home.
