Northeast State Student Veterans of America raising awareness about veteran suicides
Veteran suicide is an issue every community has been struggling with for many years.
The latest numbers from the Department of Veterans Affairs show 7,400 killed themselves in 2014. That's 18 percent of all suicides in the county and 20 veteran suicides every day.
With those numbers in mind, the Student Veterans of America organization of Northeast State Community College held a discussion about the problem on Wednesday. Veterans spoke about their experiences with suicide and suicide prevention in hopes of raising awareness.
"There's people out there for veterans. As a community, we take care of each other. For people who are not veterans, for non-veterans to know that, you know, this is a crisis that is occurring and it would be good to kind of get their support," Student Veterans of America of NSCC President John Hansen said.
Taps was played at the end of the event in memory of those already lost.
