Police: Church Hill man passed out with kids in car arrested on drug charges
A Church Hill man was arrested Saturday on multiple charges after police say they found him passed out in his car with two small children in the back seat.
According to Hawkins County police, 26-year-old Robert Joseph Debord was found in the 2600 block of Highway 11W in Surgoinsville near a Marathon gas station. A deputy spoke with a store manager who said the man had been sitting there for over an hour.
The deputy saw Debord passed out in the driver seat with a $10 bill rolled up like a straw on his lap along with a white book with a white powder substance on it. Two small children were in the back seat and the vehicle was running.
The deputy was able to make contact with the driver and when he asked him what the white powder substance was in his lap, Debord dumped it out onto his lap.
Police added that following three field sobriety tests, Debord gave police consent to search his vehicle. Deputies found a metal screen used for grinding pills into powder and a pill bottle on Debord with Buprenorphine, Clonazepam, and Gabapentin inside. Debord agreed to give a sample of his blood for testing and was arrested.
Debord was charged with driving under the influence, child endangerment, possession of Schedule IV, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a suspended license.
