Sullivan commissioners table vote on fee increases
Sullivan County commissioners postponed a vote Monday on creating a new fee for records.
The fee could make it more costly to file suit, obtain a marriage license, a business and other licenses, and building permits. Commissioners are considering attaching a $3 fee per record filed in connection with those records.
County Mayor Richard Venable told News 5 it could raise $200,000 to $300,000 a year. The plan is to use the revenue to expand archive space but details for doing that are lacking.
"If we need to build a building here in Blountville, if we need to buy a building in Blountville, the County Commission would like to have a specific proposal for how that money would be spent," Venable said.
The state has authorized the county to charge the fee.
