Sullivan County's oldest school possibly closing
Sullivan County may lose one of its schools sooner than they expected.
Weaver Elementary is the oldest school in the system, built in 1921.
Recently it was noticed that the walls in the library area have had some movement.
A structural engineering firm was hired to inspect the problem and they determined that the issue could be addressed, but the cost would run between $1.5 and $2 million dollars.
School Board Chair, Michael Hughes, says they told him that would involve tearing down that section of the school and completely rebuilding it.
He says school Superintendent Evelyn Rafalowski is planning to meet with parents of students on February 27 to answer their questions.
They are checking the wall movement on a monthly basis and don't expect to be able to use the school after this school year.
