TBI investigating inmate death at Carter County Jail


UPDATE, 5:40 p.m.

Thomas Dewey Perry, Jr., 58, has been identified as the inmate pronounced dead at a local hospital after he was found unresponsive Monday afternoon in his jail cell in Elizabethton, the TBI said.


UPDATE, 4:34 p.m.

An update from the TBI revealed it was a male inmate that was found unresponsive Monday afternoon inside their cell at the Carter County Jail in Elizabethton.

The TBI said the man was found in their cell and later died at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. The name of the inmate is being withheld pending notification to victim's family.

Agents with the TBI are investigating the incident.


A spokesperson for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirms an inmate death at the Carter County Jail in Elizabethton on Monday.

TBI Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart told News 5 their officers were contacted to investigate following the discovery of an unresponsive inmate in their cell.

More details will be released by the agency, including the inmate's name, after their complete their preliminary investigation.
