Thousands in renovations at Storytelling Center completed with inmate labor

A group of inmates from the Carter County Work Camp recently completed two-months worth of extensive repairs at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, according to a report issued Tuesday.

The Tennessee Department of Corrections said the estimated $20,000 in work served a two-fold purpose: providing the center with a cost-savings in labor costs while offenders were able to learn a new trade that could help them in acquiring a job following their release.

Some of the work include replacing carpet and hardwood in the center's library and parlor, repairing cosmetic damage to the center's exterior brick and concrete and painting the entire second floor, the report said.
