UPDATE: Carter Co. shootout victim arrested last month on domestic charges

The Carter County man shot and killed by a deputy Monday night had a lengthy criminal history: 23 arrests over a 29-year period.

Documents secured by News 5 show Buford Shane Whitson, 47, had just been arrested last month on domestic-related charges including a violation of an order of protection.

Whitson, according to a report issued late Tuesday by Sheriff Dexter Lunceford, had attacked his wife on Tuesday and then left their residence with a gun, telling her that he wanted to die. He was holding a gun to his head while talking to officers on Highway 67 before pointing the weapon at the deputy who returned fire and killed him, the sheriff said.

Whitson received a 20-year sentence in 1991 for a burglary charge and served his time in the Brushy Mountain correctional facility, according to the data. Other charges on his record included aggravated assault, shoplifting, drug possession and evading arrest.

News 5's Jessica Griffith spoke with Whitson's wife on Tuesday and will have that report tonight at 5 and 6 p.m. and later this evening on News 5 on FOX.
