UPDATE: Five Grundy Co, TN teens charged with attempted rape in football hazing case


Five football players have been charged with attempted rape after a hazing incident in the Grundy County High School football field house on Wednesday morning.

The district attorney general who represents Grundy County expects charges to be filed on Thursday against at least four male football players in connection with an alleged hazing incident inside the high school's field house on Wednesday morning, according to a report from NBC affiliate WSMV.

District Attorney General Mike Taylor said the investigation into the incident should be complete on Thursday.

Taylor said at least four boys, who are between 14 and 17 years old, were involved in the incident. The district attorney said there were more people in the field house at the time of the incident that would not be charged.

In addition, Grundy County head football coach Casey Tate has been suspended from coaching duties, according to director of schools Jessie Kinsey. Assistant coach Greg Brewer has been named interim coach. Brewer was head coach at the school from 1998-2000 and again in 2005 and 2006.

"GCHS head football coach Casey Tate is suspended from coaching pending further investigation into new information provided today," Kinsey said in a statement. "Assistant coach Greg Brewer will assume the role of head coach during this suspension."

Grundy County's football team is scheduled to play a region game on Friday at Upperman.

Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum has scheduled a press conference for 3:30 p.m. on Thursday concerning the incident at the sheriff's office.

The Grundy County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation surrounding the alleged hazing event that occurred Wednesday morning at Grundy County High School.

Shrum said in a news release that criminal charges could result from the incident that happened in the school's football field house in Coalmont.

Investigators spent Wednesday afternoon interviewing students, teachers and parents.

Kinsey confirmed the hazing incident happened at the school. She said students would be punished according to the district's handbook.

The incident has also been referred to the Department of Children's Services for review.
