UPDATE: No contact advisory on Holston River lifted following sewage spill

A no contact advisory with waters of the North Fork of the Holston River was lifted Monday following final test results showed clearing in the corridor following a sewer spill.

The ban went into affect three weeks ago from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation in portions of Hawkins and Sullivan counties after a crane collapse at a bridge construction site in Weber City, Virginia damaged a sewer line, resulting in 30,000 gallons per day emptying into the waterway.

There is no word yet on what penalties will be issued by Virginia environmental officials concerning the spill.
