UPDATE: Suspected child killer gets $1M bond
A known member of the Bloods street gang accused by Elizabethton police of killing his 3-year-old stepson had a $1 million bond set during a court hearing held Wednesday.
Demetrius Covington, 28, appeared in Criminal Court for a motion hearing and had the bond applied by Judge Lisa Rice, according to court information obtained by News 5.
The baby's mother, Ayonjaleea Shametriauna Phillips, was also in court for a plea deadline hearing. She is charged with aggravated child endangerment after being indicted in March. They are both scheduled for their next hearings on Sept. 8.
Covington, charged with first degree murder, was captured in Ohio after police said he fled the area when the child was hospitalized on Nov. 18. Ja'Kari Phillips died on Nov. 22 at a local hospital.
The stepfather had told the mother the child had fallen in the bathtub. A police report said the child had numerous bruises over his face, neck, torso, back, bottom, legs and foot.
