UPDATE: Tad Cummins pleads not guilty to kidnapping teen

The former high school teacher who police said took a former student out west triggering an Amber Alert in March has waived his court appearance and entered a plea of not guilty.

Federal court documents dated May 26 say Tad Cummins, 50, will waive his appearance at an arraignment hearing following his indictment earlier this month on charges of taking a juvenile across the state line for the purpose of sex and destroying a cell phone to hinder an investigation.

Investigators said Cummins initiated the relationship with the girl while teaching at a Maury County school and then ran away with the juvenile until the two were captured in California in April.
