UPDATE: TBI identifies shooting victim in Piney Flats incident
UPDATE, 12:00 p.m.
Sullivan County District Attorney Barry Staubus confirmed to News 5 on Tuesday that the shooter in Sunday's incident in Piney Flats is the secretary for Sullivan County Mayor Richard Venable.
Angie Bennett, who was involved in the domestic case with husband Michael, also has a son that is a current employee of the Sheriff's Office. He said that is the explanation for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation being involved in the case. Angela Bennett's son is from a previous marriage.
Staubus said he plans to take the information to a grand jury for presentment.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday identified the man wounded in a shooting incident on Sunday in Piney Flats.
Michael Bennett was found by officers at the home located in the 400 block of Beck Drive and was transported to a Johnson City hospital for treatment. There was no status update on Bennett's condition in the TBI report.
Sullivan County District Attorney Barry Staubus told News 5 on Monday that the TBI was called in to assist because a law enforcement official could be a potential witness in the case. The situation was classified as a domestic case by police.
The TBI noted that the investigation is active and ongoing and once completed the case will be turned over to Stabus for future consideration.
