UPDATE: Woman pleads guilty to hitting Carter Co. deputy with car

A Carter County woman arrested after police said she struck a deputy while trying to escape arrest last year has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Shawna Lynn Ray, 29, was charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest by motor vehicle, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license following the May 1 incident. Ray pleaded guilty to the charges Monday in Criminal Court.

Investigators said that Ray was at Central Elementary in Elizabethton when the school's resource officer approached her about driving to the school. Ray's license had been suspended by the court and when the deputy tried to arrest her, the suspect fled the scene and struck the deputy.

The officer suffered only minor injuries, according to Sheriff Dexter Lunceford.
