11-year-old girl killed in Wythe County crash

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. - An 11-year-old girl was killed in a crash on Interstate 77 in Wythe County on Monday, according to Virginia State Police.

The single-car crash occurred Monday at 2:35 p.m. on I-77 southbound at the 30 mile marker.

Police said a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta ran off the left side of the road and hit a guardrail. One of the passengers, 11-year-old Amanda G. Katanic, of Boynton Beach, Florida, died at the scene.

The 23-year-old driver and an eight-year-old boy were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

An adult female passenger was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police added alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
