8-year-old killed in ATV crash in Buchanan County, Virginia

A preliminary investigation in Buchanan County, Virginia reveals mechanical failure as the potential cause of an all-terrain vehicle crash that killed an 8-year-old girl.

Sheriff Ray Foster reported the fatality based off of a wreck that occurred in a wooded area just before 9 p.m. Sunday night in a wooded area just off of Coon Branch Road in the town of Hurley.

Foster did not reveal the name of the victim. He did note that the girl was riding with another female juvenile who suffered non-life threatening injuries and neither child was wearing a helmet. The child was found dead at the scene, the sheriff said.

"My heart goes out to the family of the little girls involved in this tragic accident. I want them to know my office is there for anything they need during this tough time," Foster said in a statement.
