Bristol, TN weight loss clinic assistant found guilty in drug trial

A Smyth County, Virginia woman was found guilty Thursday for her role in distributing amphetamines illegally from a Bristol, Tennessee weight loss clinic.

A jury convicted Melissa Lynn Hartwell, 41, of Marion, following a three-day trial in federal court in Abingdon.

Prosecutors said that Hartwell let other staff members, including co-owners of MTRx Marvin and Tracey Stanley, use her Drug Enforcement Administration credentials to forge internal documents and illegally order a Schedule IV drug for distribution to non-patients of the clinic, which is now under new ownership.

The Stanleys will be sentenced for their role in the case next month. The court has yet to determine a date for Hartwell, who could receive five years in prison and a $250,000 after being found guilty of 42 felony counts.
