Three Bristol residents are in custody on fake money and drug charges after one of them tried to pass a phony $20 bill at a Lee Highway convenience store.

A report from Washington County, VA Sheriff Fred Newman said one of the suspects tried to use the counterfeit bill at a Shell station on Monday just after 11 a.m. and then was seen entering a room at the Economy Inn across the road.

Deputies arrived at the motel after the store clerk notified police. They were given consent to search the room where more than $500 in counterfeit money was found along with drugs and drug paraphernalia, the report said.

Both Michael Paul Brown, 31, of Bristol, TN, and Tinika Shaiann Pickel, 23, of Bristol, VA are facing drug charges while Travis Allen Wampler, 25, of Bristol, TN, is charged with three crimes including possession of and passing of counterfeit bills, according to the sheriff.

All three are being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.
