A Clintwood man was arrested Tuesday after leading officers from three agencies on a chase that included the suspect striking a deputy's cruiser.

Dickenson County Sheriff Bobby Hammonds said Nicholas Shane Buchanan, 37, of Clintwood, was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, eluding, reckless driving, illegal turning, driving with a revoked license and failure to keep right of center.

Deputies were conducting a traffic check on Rockhouse Road when Buchanan was spotted leaving the scene to avoid the checkpoint, the report said. The chase covered several miles and Hammonds noted that Buchanan's SUV collided with the officer's car on Honey Camp Road. Officers with the Virginia State Police and the Clintwood Police Department were also called to assist in the chase.

The chase ended when Buchanan jumped out of the car and fled on foot near Preacher Road where he was apprehended. The suspect is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Haysi on a $2,500 secured bond, the report said.
