Eight SW Virginia school system deemed fully accredited by VDOE

Eight school systems in Southwest Virginia have earned full accreditation from the Department of Education based on recent Standards of Learning scores and other criteria.

The agency announced that 86 percent of Virginia's public schools are now at what the state calls its highest level of achievement.

Those regional schools include:

Dickenson County City of Norton Russell County Scott County Smyth County Tazewell County Washington County Wise County

"For a school to earn full accreditation, students must achieve adjusted pass rates of at least 75 percent in English and at least 70 percent on assessments in mathematics, science and history. High schools must also meet a benchmark for graduation and completion," VDOE said in the report.

Bristol City Schools' Highland View Elementary was designated as a Focus school by the department. That school must employ state-approved, school-improvement coaches to help bring students up to standard.
