Four former federal prison guards in Lee Co. indicted
Four former prison guards who worked at the U.S. Penitentiary in Lee County have been indicted for filing false reports following a Department of Justice investigation.
Charles Carter, 47, of Wise, Va., Ryan Sluss, 27, of Coeburn, William Marshal, 49, of Jonesville all face one charge of making a false statement and using a false writing in a matter within the executive branch of the U.S. while Jerry Shuler, 38, of Big Stone Gap, is facing 10 counts on that charge.
Prosecutors said that the men falsified forms while working at the facility related to required checks on inmates that were never conducted, said the report issued by U.S. District Court in Abingdon. .
The men were released after posting bond and a jury trial for the case is scheduled to begin Dec. 27 in Big Stone Gap, according to court records.
